New California law might soon force bidirectional charging upon EV makers

While some electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and Kia Nero already offer some form of two-way charging, this feature is still far from mainstream. However, Gavin Newsom just signed a new law that could speed up the process of adding this feature to electric vehicles, at least those sold in California.

According to Electrek, the addition of bi-directional charging, with the ability to export power back to the grid or at least to a power bank for individual household use, could bring real benefits to the entire region. Same source (link in sources section) claims

The widespread use of two-way charging could bring huge benefits to efficiency, grid resilience and increase the penetration of renewable energy generation.

As climate change increases the number of summer days, California's electricity gluttons face extremely high demand and summertime use of air conditioners becomes a necessity for most businesses and homes. Currently, California uses natural gas power plants, which are the most polluting of all available power generation methods in the state, to handle peak demand periods.

The problem with the new law is that there's no timetable mentioned yet, so it could be months, or at least years, before things start moving in the right direction. Those who already own an electric vehicle and may be looking for a charger can now take advantage of Amazon's 11% discount on the Skysword II Level 1-2 EV Charger with NEMA 6-20 Plug and NEMA 5-15 Adapter (available for purchase) is $159 instead of $179.

These are the details of a new California law that may soon force electric car manufacturers to implement two-way charging. For more information, please pay attention to other related articles on the PHP Chinese website!
