Apple plans to refresh the iPad Air in early 2025, about a year after the 2024 update. We don't have a full picture of what's going to happen yet, but rumors suggest there will be an updated chip and new accessories.
Design
Apple updated the iPad Air design for 2024, introducing two size options to match the iPad Pro models. In 2025, we're once again expecting 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, but so far we haven't heard any news about design changes.
The 2025 iPad Air models are expected to continue to feature the same design as the 2024 iPad Air models, with an aluminum chassis with flat sides and rounded edges surrounding the LCD display. Apple is expected to continue to offer a Touch ID power button and USB-C port for biometric authentication.
Even if we don't make design changes, there may be other color options. The current iPad Air comes in space gray, purple, blue, and starlight (a soft gold).
A series chips
While Apple added the M4 to the iPad Pro and will bring it to its latest Mac models this year, the iPad Air is expected to feature the M3, an upgrade from the current M2 chip.
The M3 chip is based on Apple's newer 3nm process. Although it is not as fast as the M4, it is relativelyIt's a significant upgrade over the M2. M3's CPU performance is 30% faster than M2 CPU performance and GPU performance is 15% faster. M3 is more efficient than M2, has longer battery life, and features a new GPU architecture that uses dynamic caching to improve graphics performance in GPU-intensive applications and games. Support for hardware-based ray tracing to improve the gaming experience on iPad.
It is rumored that the iPad Air will use M3, rather than the newer M4 found in iPad Pro models, to differentiate the two tablets. Apple plans to keep the iPad Air one step behind the iPad Pro.
Apple Intelligence
Current iPad Air models with M2 chips support Apple Intelligence in iPadOS 18, M3 chips will also work
display
The main differences between iPad Pro and iPad Air are OLED display technology and support for the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. We don't expect significant display updates in 2025, and as of now, Apple has no plans to bring ProMotion to the iPad Air.
Other features
Apple is bringing Wi-Fi 7 support to its latest iPhone models, so we could start to see more products updated to the latest Wi-Fi protocol. Wi-Fi 7 brings faster speeds and lower latency, and if the new iPad Air doesn't come with Wi-Fi 7, it will continue to use Wi-Fi 6E.
Magic Keyboard
Apple is developing a new version of the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air, which should launch around the same time as the next-generation iPad Air. It won't have an aluminum top shell like the iPad Pro's Magic Keyboard, but it will have the same functional row of keys.
Release date
The next iPad Air will launch sometime "early next year," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
